Can Botox Help Excessive Sweating?

Excessive underarm sweating is quite the nuisance, but it doesn't have to be. Dandelion Medical Aesthetics and the power of Botox can help. Referred to medically as hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating can cause those who suffer from it a great deal of embarrassment and anxiety in both professional and social situations. It is generally not related to physical activity or situations where one expects to perspire more. It happens despite being at rest or in relaxed situations.

Excessive sweating affects 2 to 4 percent of the population, approximately 6 to 12 million people. Both men and women are affected equally. The onset is often during adolescence and it can be genetic. Most cases are unrelated to any other medical condition, but in some instances it is a symptom of a medical problem or even caused by prescription medications.

How Does Botox Treat Excessive Sweating?

Treatment of excessive sweating includes prescription deodorants and anti-perspirants, however these often fail to control the problem. Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is an FDA-approved treatment for excessive underarm sweating. Patients who rate their sweating 10 on a scale of 0 to 10 report a decrease to 0 to 3 after a Botox treatment. Patients report increased confidence and decreased anxiety because their excessive sweating has resolved. Results are noticed 2 to 10 days after the treatment and last 3 to 6 months.

Botox is injected with a very fine needle just under the skin in the underarm area. The multiple injections required can be uncomfortable, however, icing the area or applying a topical numbing cream makes the procedure very tolerable. It takes only about five minutes to complete the treatment and it can be combined with any other treatment. There is no downtime and patients can go on with their day immediately following treatment.
